An ancient tradition between folklore, spectacle and mystery
Every year, in the heart of the Julian Alps, Tarvisio is transformed into the stage for one of the most fascinating and frightening traditions of the Christmas season: the Krampus Festival.
Who are the Krampus?
Krampus are legendary figures of Alpine folklore: monstrous beings covered in skins, with demonic masks and jingling cowbells.
Their mission?
Accompany St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children, and symbolically punish those who have misbehaved during the year.
The Parade
On Dec. 5, starting late in the afternoon, the streets of Tarvisio-between Via Roma and Piazza Unità-come alive with the eerie Krampus parade. Amid fires, deafening sounds and striking scenery, hundreds of figures bring to life a spectacular procession that attracts thousands of visitors each year.
St. Nicholas and the Gifts
While the Krampus scare and fascinate, St. Nicholas rewards the little ones with sweets and small gifts, keeping the sweetest and most traditional part of the holiday alive.
Home visits
The celebration continues beyond the city streets: in many homes, St. Nicholas and his creepy companions visit children, carrying on a tradition that unites generations.
Come and have a unique experience
The Krampus Festival is more than just an event: it is a journey through time, an immersion in Alpine folklore, and an unmissable opportunity to experience Tarvisio in a magical and unforgettable atmosphere.
